Forklift maintenance in three layers: who does what?

Forklift maintenance has three layers: the operator checks the forklift before use, a technician carries out periodic maintenance according to the manufacturer's instructions, and a competent person or body inspects the forklift periodically. Under the Dutch Working Conditions Decree (Arbobesluit), you as the employer must use adequate maintenance to prevent risks to your employees as far as possible (article 7.5).

Maintenance (Arbobesluit article 7.5) and inspection (article 7.4a) are two separate obligations.
LayerWhoWhen
Pre-use checkThe operatorDaily, before first use: see what to check before you start
Periodic maintenanceA technician with specific expertise and experienceAccording to the manufacturer's maintenance schedule, based on operating hours
Periodic inspectionA competent person or bodyAs often as needed to keep it in good condition, and for example after an accident or a long period out of use: see forklift inspection

According to Arboportaal, operating mobile work equipment such as a forklift usually requires specific expertise. Anyone who maintains or repairs such equipment needs specific expertise and experience for this (article 7.6). The work is done on a forklift that has been switched off and isolated from power or depressurised; if that is not possible, you take other effective measures (article 7.5(2)).

The maintenance log

If the forklift comes with a maintenance log, keep it properly up to date (article 7.5(4)). According to Arboportaal, it allows you to show the Netherlands Labour Authority after an incident that adequate maintenance was carried out. After maintenance, the forklift must still meet its original manufacturing requirements and safety devices must not have been removed or disabled (Arboportaal).

Operating hours set the timing

Your starting point is the manufacturer's instruction manual: according to Arboportaal, it usually contains information on maintenance. Hyundai works in operating hours. According to the brochure for the 70D-9V, 80D-9V and 100D-9V diesel forklifts (7 to 10 tonnes), the fuel filter replacement interval has been extended from 500 to 1,000 hours. On these models the display shows which parts are due for replacement once the replacement cycles have been entered; on the electric 60B-X to 90B-X, the display warns of the upcoming maintenance interval.

Maintaining an electric forklift: what is different?

On an electric forklift, battery maintenance depends on the battery type: lead-acid or lithium-ion. The mast, chains, forks, brakes, tyres and hydraulics are subject to the same maintenance and inspection obligations as on a diesel or LPG forklift.

  • Lead-acid battery: hydrogen gas, which is flammable, can form when batteries are charged (Netherlands Labour Authority). Charge in a place set up for this purpose, see setting up a forklift battery charging station, and follow the battery manufacturer's instructions for topping up and charging.
  • Lithium-ion battery: with the lithium-ion battery that Hyundai offers as an option for the BT-9U, there is no need to top up distilled water or electrolyte and no hazardous gases are produced during charging, according to Hyundai. Hyundai describes it as virtually maintenance-free, with a service life at least twice that of a lead-acid battery (more than 4,000 charge cycles).
  • High voltage: the 60B-X to 90B-X have a 348-volt lithium-ion battery (LFP) which, according to Hyundai, needs no daily or weekly maintenance and can be topped up in between (opportunity charging). The high-voltage cables are marked in orange; for maintenance, the technician fully isolates the high-voltage system by removing the service plug (MSD).

Which battery suits your application is explained in lead-acid or lithium-ion forklift.

Who does the maintenance when you rent or lease?

With operational lease, we take care of it: maintenance, repairs, the annual VA inspection and a replacement machine are part of the monthly price. If you rent a forklift, it is delivered VA-inspected and the quotation states what falls under maintenance. For maintenance, technicians come to you on site.

Operational lease runs for 12 to 84 months (price on request). With financial lease, through our regular partners from €339 per month excl. VAT, you are the economic owner and arrange the maintenance yourself or through us: see forklift leasing.

A rented forklift is also work equipment: the Dutch Working Conditions Act (Arbowet) covers all machines used at the workplace (article 1). The pre-use check therefore remains with your operator. If your own forklift is out of action for maintenance or repair, you can rent a forklift temporarily.
