What is a diesel forklift?
A diesel forklift is an internal combustion engine forklift (diesel). Due to its high torque and robust construction, diesel is often the best choice for outdoor work, heavy loads and intensive effort in locations where electric or LPG is less suitable.

When do you choose diesel?
Diesel is particularly strong for outdoor work, heavier tonnages, and situations where you need to work continuously. The matrix below helps you decide quickly.

Power & stability
We rent out diesel forklifts from 2.5 to 30 tonnes. You will often see diesel in the class 2.5–3.5 ton for all-around outdoor work, but diesel is also chosen for heavier tonnages.

Pay attention to the load center when using clamps, extension booms, and buckets – this can reduce the effective capacity.

What is the disadvantage of a diesel forklift?
The biggest disadvantage of a diesel forklift is its emissions. The engine gives off exhaust fumes and soot and makes more noise than an electric forklift. That is why you use a diesel forklift outdoors. For indoor work, choose an electric forklift.
- Exhaust fumes: not suitable for warehouses, production halls and other enclosed spaces.
- Noise: a diesel engine is louder than an electric drive.
- Fuel: the diesel is at your expense and is not included in the rental price.

What tires do I need for my terrain?
For industrial use, superelastic tires are popular (puncture-proof). For rough terrain, pneumatic tires or profiled tires might be better.

How does a diesel forklift work?
A diesel forklift is a counterbalance forklift with a diesel engine: the load sits on the forks in front of the front axle and the counterweight at the rear keeps the machine balanced.
According to Hyundai, the 25D-9V and 30D-9V have a 2.2-litre HMC D4HB diesel engine (2,199 cc) with a turbocharger and an output of 47.8 kW. An oxidation catalyst and a particulate filter (DOC + DPF) clean the exhaust gases, and the engine meets the European Stage V emission standard. With a switch on the dashboard, the driver chooses between a low power mode with lower fuel consumption and more power.
Types of diesel forklift: from 2.5 to 30 tonnes

From 7 tonnes upwards these are heavy forklifts from the Hyundai Heavy Line. According to the datasheet, the 70D-9V (7 tonnes) weighs 10,145 kg and the 250D-9V (25 tonnes) 38,780 kg; the latter is 3,069 mm wide and has a turning radius of 5,830 mm. How much fuel does a diesel forklift use?
According to the Hyundai datasheets, the 25D-9V (2.5 tonnes) uses 2.7 litres of diesel per hour in the VDI cycle, the 30D-9V (3 tonnes) 3.0 litres, the 40D-9VB (4 tonnes) 3.8 litres, the 45D-9VB (4.5 tonnes) 4.0 litres and the 70D-9V (7 tonnes) 4.2 litres.
The VDI 2198 guideline sets out how manufacturers present technical data uniformly in a type sheet, so that you can compare models. The values apply to the standard version; according to Hyundai, different tyres, masts or options give different values.
Can you use a diesel forklift indoors?
Only if there is sufficient clean air at the workplace: article 7.17c(7) of the Arbobesluit (Dutch Working Conditions Decree) requires this for every forklift with a combustion engine. Because diesel engine exhaust is carcinogenic, the Netherlands Labour Authority also says that as an employer you are obliged to replace the diesel engine if that is technically feasible.
If replacement is not possible, you record this in your risk assessment (RI&E) and take technical measures. According to the Labour Authority, a machine of 19 to 560 kW that meets the latest Stage standard or has a retrofit particulate filter has minimal emissions, but that does not release you from the obligation to replace. Since 1 July 2020 a legal limit value of 10 micrograms of diesel engine exhaust per cubic metre has applied, measured as respirable elemental carbon. As an alternative the Labour Authority mentions an LPG forklift, among others; the requirement for sufficient clean air applies to that too. Diesel, LPG or electric forklift: which suits your work?
If you work indoors, an electric forklift from 1.5 to 18 tonnes is the alternative without a combustion engine; up to 5 tonnes you can also choose LPG. Above 18 tonnes we only rent out diesel forklifts.

What does it cost to hire a diesel forklift?
You can hire a 2.5-tonne diesel forklift from €75 per day, excl. VAT. For hire periods of 3 months or more a monthly rate applies; from 4 tonnes the price is on request. For a few days or a week, see forklift rental per day.

Questions about the diesel forklift
How high does a diesel forklift lift?
With the standard mast from the datasheet, the 25D-9V lifts to 3,305 mm; with a 3- or 4-stage mast it reaches more than 7 metres according to the Hyundai mast table. The higher the mast, the lower the lifting capacity: according to the mast table the 120D-9V lifts 12,000 kg, but 10,860 kg with a mast for a fork height of 7,005 mm.
How fast does a diesel forklift go?
According to the datasheet, the 25D-9V travels at 16.4 km/h laden and 17.7 km/h unladen, the 40D-9VB at 26.5 and 28.4 km/h. A maximum travel speed can be set in the instrument panel of the D-9V series.
Does a diesel forklift have a particulate filter?
The Hyundai 25D-9V and 30D-9V have one as standard (DPF), which regenerates automatically. In an area with a fire risk, the driver can postpone this regeneration, which releases hot exhaust gases, with a switch.
