Forklift Selection Guide
Which forklift do I need? How to choose the right rental forklift for your company
Electric, LPG, or diesel? 2.5 tons or 8 tons? Compact for the warehouse or a heavy-duty outdoor forklift? Making the right choice is important for safety, efficiency, and costs.Via ForkliftRental.com As an official Hyundai partner, we will guide you step-by-step to the perfect rental forklift.
1. Why choosing the right forklift is so important
A forklift is not a “one size fits all” machine. A forklift that is too light, has the wrong mast, or is a model that doesn't suit the surface can lead to:
- Unnecessary downtime and damage to goods or shelving;
- Unsafe situations for drivers and colleagues;
- Higher costs than necessary – for example, due to overkill in capacity;
- Frustration for the driver due to insufficient maneuverability or poor visibility.
This is why we at HeftruckHuren.com invest a lot of time in Think ahead carefully. We look beyond just lifting capacity and daily rate: environment, usage duration, pallet type, passageways, and logistics process all play a role.
2. The 7 most important selection criteria
At its core, it comes down to seven questions. The better you answer them, the better the forklift will fit your company.
Environment & Foundation
- Indoor only, flat floor: usually electric, possibly with non-marking tires.
- Mixed indoor & outdoor: electric or LPG, sometimes diesel with a cabin.
- Mainly outdoors / rough terrain: diesel forklift with deep tread and robust mast.
More explanation can be found in our General forklift rental page and at forklifts for ports and industry .
2) Power & Center of Gravity
It's not just about the weight, but also about how far the load protrudes.A 2.5-ton truck cannot always safely place a pallet with long goods at height.
- Map the heaviest load (kg/ton);
- Pay attention to load length (e.g., long profiles, timber bundles, machines);
- Consider potential growth: will it get heavier later?
3) Lifting height & mast
How high do you need to be able to lift safely and what is your passage height? A triplex mast can lift high, but also has a certain passage height.
- Highest rack or truck/container height;
- Lowest door, gate or passage on the route;
- Need for free lift (with low doors and still high racks).
4) Aisle width & maneuverability
Narrow aisles call for a compact forklift or reach truck. For example, a 3-wheel forklift has a smaller turning radius than a 4-wheel forklift.
- Measure your aisles between the shelves.;
- Watch for intersections, turns, and docks.;
- Consider a compact model or another mast if space is tight.
5) Drive: electric, LPG or diesel
Globally, you can see it like this:
- Electric: Still, emission-free and ideal for internal logistics.
- LPG quick refueling, flexible indoor/outdoor use (provided good ventilation).
- Diesel Powerful, ideal for outdoors and heavy loads.

6) Stakes & Energy
Does the forklift run for a few hours a day or in shifts? This determines whether you can get by with a standard battery or need fast charging/swappable batteries.
- Less than 4 hours per day: Standard electric or LPG is usually sufficient;
- 5–8 hours: electric with good charging planning or LPG/diesel;
- Intensive / multiple shifts heavy duty electric or diesel, depending on the environment.
7) Forklift Attachments, Forks & Safety
Finally, consider your forklift's equipment:
- Need extension legs or long legs?
- One bucket, fork rotator or other attachment equipment?
- Extra lighting, blue spot, buzzer, or cameras for increased safety?
3. 5 common mistakes when choosing a forklift
In practice, we often see the same mistakes recur. By knowing them, you prevent unnecessary costs and risks.
Error 1: Underestimating lifting capacity
People only look at “average” pallets, while there is sometimes a much heavier load. It is precisely that one pallet that determines which truck you need. Insufficient capacity is a safety risk.
Error 2: Do not measure lifting height and aisles
A forklift that theoretically reaches a certain height can practically get stuck on a low door or too narrow aisles. A few minutes of measuring can save a lot of hassle later.
Error 3: Incorrect drive selection
A diesel forklift in an indoor warehouse is rarely a good idea. Conversely, a light electric truck might be insufficient outdoors on rough terrain. Always match the drive to the environment.
Error 4: No accounting for growth
If your company is growing rapidly, the tax on your forklift can double in a short period of time. It's better to choose something a bit more spacious now than to have to overhaul everything in a year.
Error 5: Safety and inspection forgotten
A forklift must demonstrably be safe and undergo periodic inspections. In the Netherlands, there is often work with hallmarks such as VA-certified.Inspections are included in the package when renting through HeftruckHuren.com.

Some typical real-world scenarios:
Warehouse & E-commerce
A customer with narrow aisles and high racks is switching to a compact Electric Hyundai forklift with a tall mast and good lighting. Result: more pallets per hour, less damage, and peace of mind for drivers.
Construction & outdoor area
For a construction project with varying terrain, we recommend a diesel forklift with cabin, With a low profile and sufficient lifting capacity. The truck operates outdoors in all weather and is simply picked up afterward.
Havens & Heavy Industry
For an industrial client with heavy project loads, we deploy a combination of a 8-ton diesel forklift and a lighter truck for lighter work. This way, the heavy equipment remains available for the really big jobs.
6. Checklist: What information do you need?
With this quick checklist, you'll have the most important information at your fingertips for our advisors:
