Rent a forklift at docks & ramps: this is how you prevent slips, damage, and downtime

Docks, loading bays, thresholds, and ramps are often where forklift damage and near misses begin. With the right truck (drive, tires, mast, options) and simple work equipment, you can work faster and safer.

Quick advice? Forward: heaviest burden, headline, route (ramps/speed bumps), inside/outside en doorway. Then we'll match the right Hyundai forklift directly.

Why docks & ramps are extra critical

A forklift is often on a dock heavily burdened (last met schuin oplopende vloer en krappe bochten) while the margins are small (dock edges, doors, shelves, pedestrian routes). That's precisely why it's worth choosing the right package in advance: drive, Tires, mast en security options.

1) Select drive based on route and terrain

The “best” choice depends on your routes. This is a practical guideline:

Situation Recommended Why
Indoor + docks, paved area Electric Control, comfort, emission-free – ideal for warehouse work
Lots of changes between inside/outside LPG Flexible, fast refueling, pleasant for short stops
Rough terrain, heavy commitment, many disasters Diesel Coupling, traction, robust – suitable for intensive outdoor use

Are you unsure? Use the decision aid: Which forklift do I need? or the Decision guide in 5 steps.

2) Tires & grip: prevent slipping on slopes and speed bumps

Grip is crucial on ramps. Especially on wet cobblestones, slippery concrete, dust/foil, or light oil traces. We recommend tire selection based on: route, incline, turns, and surface.

  • Profile strips → more traction on outdoor routes/rough terrain.
  • Tires → more damping on uneven terrain (comfort + control).
  • Rubber sole → Strong on paved terrain, but watch out for slipperiness when wet/greasy.

3) Mast, lift height, and residual capacity (often underestimated)

At docks, they often work with lift at height en long/unstable loads (foil, big bags, pallets with high center of gravity). Important: the higher and further forward, the lower the Rest capacity.

Practical: take your heaviest burden and calculate 20–25% margin, especially with longer forks or an altered center of gravity. This is also stated in our selection tool: determine load capacity with margin.

4) Options that truly make a difference with docks

When loading/unloading, it's not just about “tonnage,” but about speed and control. These are the most popular options:

  • Sideshift → faster and more precise positioning without extra stitches.
  • Forklift adjuster → Quick changeover between pallet widths and different loads.
  • Fork extensions → for longer pallets/loads (always indicate in advance).
  • Blue Spot / Red Zone Visible warning light at pedestrian routes.

More options (rotators, clamps, (tilting) buckets, cameras, etc.): forklift attachments.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which forklift is best for ramps and loading docks?
That depends on the surface and load. On paved terrain, electric is often perfect (control and comfort). On rough terrain or for heavy use, diesel is often more logical. LPG is strong for alternating between indoors and outdoors. We advise based on route, gradient, and remaining capacity.
Which options yield the most profit at docks?
Usually sideshift en forklift adjuster (faster positioning with fewer stitches), plus additional lighting/Blue Spot on walkways. For special loads: look at attachment equipment.
Is delivery and pickup included?
We arrange transport practically with you. Read how it works: forklift rental including transport.
