Rent a forklift for containers & trucks: here's how to prevent damage and downtime
Loading and unloading containers (20/40 ft) and trailers requires the right combination of ability, headline, stability en vision. In this guide, you'll read about which forklift configuration works best in practice — including a checklist.
Quickly find the right match: send yours heaviest burden, headline, container/trailer, subsurface (asphalt/pavers/yard) en doorway. Then we directly recommend the right Hyundai forklift.
Leverage
Allow for 20–25% of reserve due to center of gravity/lift height.
Grip & Surface
Yard work requires different tires than warehouse floors.
Time-saving options
Sideshift, fork positioners, and fork extensions prevent stabbing.
Transport arranged
Delivery & returns on location with a clear schedule.
When do you need a “container-ready” forklift?
You'll quickly get into container work as soon as you deal with long/unstable loads, higher lifting heights, tight loading openings or a Rough ground (clinkers, yard, stelcon slabs). Think about: pallets deep in the container, big bags, machines, steel, lumber packages, or bulk packaging.
1) Choose the correct tonnage (with margin)
The nominal lifting capacity doesn't tell the whole story: with longer forks or an altered center of gravity, the effective capacity decreases. Therefore, for container work, we almost always recommend a range of 20–25%.
Case study
Normally you lift 2,500 kg, but are you working with longer forks or deep inside a container? Then 3,000–3,500 kg is often a safer choice. With the right configuration, you can work faster and prevent damage to the container, load, and truck.
2) Drive: indoor/outdoor and route determine the choice
| Situation | Advice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Warehouse + paved dock | Electric forklift | Comfort, control, emission-free |
| Alternating indoor/outdoor | LPG forklift | Flexible, fast refueling, practical to use |
| Rough terrain + heavy use | Diesel forklift | Coupling, traction, and robust deployability |
Do you have structurally heavy container movements? Then also consider large forklift / heavy-duty.
3) Tires & surface: grip prevents damage
Container work often happens outdoors or in transitional zones. Grip and stability are crucial in these situations (especially on wet pavers or Stelcon plates). We select tire types based on your terrain and routes.
- Profile strips → Extra traction on yard and rough terrain.
- Tires damping and control on uneven surfaces.
- Rubber sole → strong on paved terrain (note: slippery when wet).
4) Attachments: work faster with fewer maneuvers
Space is limited in containers. With the right options, you'll save time and reduce the risk of damage. Commonly requested for container and trailer work:
- Sideshift (precise positioning without extra stitches)
- Forklift adjuster (Faster switching between pallet widths)
- Fork extensions (with deeper loading or longer pallets)
More options forklift attachments.
Delivery, transport, and support: tightly managed
Container work is often time-critical. Therefore, we coordinate delivery and configuration carefully in advance — so you can start on-site immediately.
Container checklist: this is what we need for a suitable quote
- Heaviest burden + type last (high center of gravity / long / unstable)
- Hefhoogte + free levy required (yes/no)
- Area of workcontainer, trailer, dock, yard (in/out)
- Substrateconcrete/asphalt/pavers/stelcon + wet/slippery risk
- Optionssideshift, fork positioner, fork extensions, additional lighting
- Rental periodday/week/month or long term
- Logisticsaccess and space for unloading/transport
