Forklift vs. stacker vs. pallet truck: what's most efficient for each job?

The fastest and cheapest solution isn't always “the biggest machine.” With this quick decision tree, you can choose what suits the job — based on height, distance, floor/environment en Lead time. Without sales talk: just clear choices.

Quick rules of thumb

0–20 m often manually okay 20–200 m Electric usually wins • 200 m Look at driving speed/comfort

0–0.20 m = Floor-level transport (pump truck/pallet jack) • 0.20–2.5 m stacking/rack tiering (stacker) outdoors/slopes = forklift usually safer and faster

Truly efficient = as few “extra steps” (re-stacking, turning, waiting) as possible and as little damage/risk as possible.

Decision tree

Decision tree in 60 seconds

Should the load be lifted?

  • No → go to step 2
  • Yes, up to approximately 2–3 meters.stacker
  • Yes, higher / outside / on slopeforklift

2) How far do you move?

  • Short (occasionally, short distances) fire truck
  • Regularly (many rides) electric pallet jack
  • Language + heavy / continuous flow → often electric or forklift (see matrix)

Where do you work?

  • Narrow corridors / warehouse pallet jack / stacker
  • Dock / truck loading → often forklift
  • Outdoor / uneven floor forklift (stability & speed)

Borderline case? Note down 4 things: weight, headline, distance, subsoil. This usually makes the choice immediately clear.

Quick choice

Matrix: What machine is right for the job?

Situation Hose reel Electric pallet jack Stacker Forklift
Floor transport (no lift height) ✅ small/incident ✅✅ many rides ⚠️ possible, but not necessary ⚠️ Often overkill
Stacking / racking (low-medium) ⚠️ transport only ✅✅ ✅ (especially outside/docks)
Narrow aisles / tight space ⚠️ depending on width
Outdoor / uneven floor / slope ⚠️ limited ⚠️ limited ✅✅
Truck loading/unloading, intensive Warning, slow ⚠️ dependent on dock ⚠️ limited ✅✅

Please note: Efficiency also depends on “flow”: how many pallets per hour, how many stops, how many turns, and how many thresholds.

When do you choose a (hand) pallet truck?

A hand pallet truck is most efficient when you occasional moved, short distances rides and the burden not up Needs. Think of: pallet from A to B, small internal movements, or as backup.

Good idea if...

  • You have few rides per day (low frequency)
  • The floor is flat and clean.
  • The load on a standard pallet is

Less efficient than…

  • The more meters you make (fatigue = slower pace)
  • You have thresholds/ramps
  • You constantly move pallets (electric is faster then)
Electric pallet jack

When would you choose an electric pallet truck?

Electric is especially worthwhile for many trips and longer distances.

An electric pallet truck is often the fastest choice when repetitive transport on floor level: less physical strain, a more constant pace, and usually a better turnaround time per pallet.

Typical ‘win’ situations

  • Order picking and supply to workstations
  • Cross-docking (lots of back and forth)
  • Distances from ~20 to 200+ meters

Stacker

When do you choose a stacker?

A stacker is efficient when you pallets want to stack of Low to medium in positions, and your work environment above all inside en train is.

Good idea if...

  • You need height, but not a “forklift environment” (outdoors, slopes).
  • you have narrow paths and want to work compactly
  • The pallets are positioned at machines or pick locations.

Less efficient than…

  • You ride outdoors a lot or have to go over speed bumps/uneven floors
  • You take really high positions or load/unload trucks intensively

Forklift

A forklift is more efficient when it's used for specific tasks.

A forklift wins when you're dealing with outdoor work, slopes, uneven ground, Truck loading/unloading or if you have combined tasks: moving and stacking and rotating at pace.

Typical ‘forklift’ signals

  • You load/unload trucks, containers, or dock work (pace + stability)
  • You work outdoors or drive between buildings.
  • You have heavy pallets/loads and want a safety margin.

Practical When the ground/environment is the limiting factor, you are almost always better off choosing a forklift over warehouse equipment.

Examples

Practical examples: what is most efficient per job?

E-commerce warehouse (many trips, no lifting height)

Best match: electric pallet jack

Why: constant pace, less load, quick back and forth.

Production (positioning pallets at machine)

Best match: stacker

Why: precise placement + limited height, often in a tight space.

Dock (loading/unloading + exterior piece)

Best match: forklift

Why: stability on transitions, speed, and versatility.

Small storage (occasional moving)

Best match: fire truck

Why: simple, quick to deploy, lowest “setup”.

Retaining wall to medium height

Best match: stacker (or forklift for outdoor/sloped areas)

Why: Height is needed, but a forklift is not always needed/practical indoors.

Long distances internally (many meters per day)

Best match: electric (pallet truck) or forklift

Why: ride pace + comfort determine turnaround time.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

When is a stacker “too light” and do I need a forklift?

Usually when you outside rides, over Thresholds/uneven floor must, or if you intensive trucks load/unload. Then stability and rhythm are more important than compactness.

Is an electric pallet jack always faster than a hand pallet jack?

Bye many rides almost always. For very occasional work and short distances, a pump truck can be perfectly fine. The tipping point is often frequency: as soon as you drive structurally on a daily basis, electric wins.

What information do I need to make the right choice quickly?

Note: weight, headline, distance meters per rit subsoil.Add: aisle width/space and whether you can exit outside.
